Tylenol (Acetaminophen)
General information
Tylenol belongs to a group of medicines called analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers). It works quickly to relieve pain caused by conditions such as headache and osteoarthritis, and to reduce fever caused by infection. It is used by itself as well as in combination medication products for cough, cold, and pain relief.
Directions
Use Tylenol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more Tylenol than is recommended. An overdose can damage your liver or cause death. The recommended dose for adults is 325 mg to 650 mg every 4 to 6 hours to a maximum of 4,000 mg in 24 hours. The recommended dose for children is 10 to 15 mg per kg of body weight, every 4 to 6 hours, to a maximum of 65 mg/kg in 24 hours. Urine glucose tests may produce false results while you are taking Tylenol.
Precautions
Before taking Tylenol tell your doctor if you have liver disease (cirrhosis), a history of alcoholism. Avoid drinking alcohol. It may increase your risk of liver damage while taking Tylenol. Tylenol is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
Contraindications
Do not take this medication if you are allergic to acetaminophen or any ingredients of the medication, or if you have liver disease, cirrhosis. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have jaundice, dark urine, nausea, hives, loss of appetite, stomach pain, difficulty breathing, black, tarry stools, swelling of your face, lips, diarrhea, itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor immediately.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially: rifampin, phenobarbital, acetylsalicylic acid, blood thinners, phenytoin, isoniazid, cholestyramine, carbamazepine. Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are dark urine, loss of appetite, vomiting, yellowing of your skin, sweating, stomach pain, nausea, weakness.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
