Ansaid (Flurbiprofen)

General information

Ansaid is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by inhibiting the action of certain hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. These hormones are called prostaglandins. Ansaid is used to reduce pain, swelling, and joint stiffness from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. This medication may also be used to treat arthritis of the spine.

Directions

Take Ansaid exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended dose ranges from 200 mg to 300 mg daily divided into 4 to 6 doses. Ansaid should be taken with food or milk. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this drug. Do not take more than 100 mg as a single dose. The recommended starting dosage for most people with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis is 200 mg per day.

Precautions

Before taking Ansaid you should talk with your doctor if you have asthma, heart disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure (hypertension), liver disease or failure, kidney disease or failure, bleeding problems, diabetes, nasal polyps, systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, dehydration, any allergies. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Limit alcohol and stop smoking while taking Ansaid. Daily use of alcohol and tobacco may increase your risk for stomach bleeding.

Contraindications

You should not take Ansaid if you are allergic to flurbiprofen or to any of the ingredients of the medication, are pregnant (3d trimester) or breastfeeding, are taking other NSAIDs, or if you have bleeding in the brain or a bleeding disorder, high levels of potassium in the blood, inflammatory disease of the stomach or intestines (stomach or intestinal ulcer, ulcerative colitis), uncontrolled heart failure, significant liver impairment or liver disease. It should not be used if you are younger than 18 years of age.

Possible side effect

Get emergency medical help if you have upset stomach, constipation, fluid retention, runny nose, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, confusion, fainting, skin rash, increased blood pressure, ringing in your ears, hives, voice changes, blurred vision, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, loss of appetite, itching, rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, slurred speech, dry mouth, increased sweating, swelling of your face, lips, tongue. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: beta-blockers (propranolol, bisoprolol, metoprolol, atenolol), ACE inhibitors (lisinopril, enalapril, quinapril, benazepril), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (diclofenac, naproxen, ibuprofen, indomethacin), aspirin, steroids (prednisone, hydrocortisone, prednisolone), methotrexate, lithium, cyclosporine, diuretics (furosemide, torsemide, bumetanide), blood thinners (warfarin).Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are stomach pain, vomit, extreme drowsiness, loss of consciousness, slowed or shallow breathing, dizziness, urinating less than usual, bloody stools, fainting.

Storage

Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
